Lancaster Adventures & Parkland Wonders

Lancaster City

Lancaster is a friendly historic city in northwest England with plenty to enjoy for all ages. Perched on a hilltop, Lancaster Castle invites families to explore its medieval walls, old rooms, and former prison cells, with great views over the River Lune. The Lancaster City Museum, set in a Georgian building, brings the city’s past to life with engaging displays about local history and its army regiment.

Lancaster’s maritime history can be discovered at the Lancaster Maritime Museum, offering an interesting look at the city’s seafaring past in a relaxed, accessible setting.

Williamson Park & Ashton Memorial

Located just a 25–30-minute uphill walk from Lancaster city centre, Williamson Park spans 54 acres of beautiful parkland, offering enchanting woodland walks, play areas, and breathtaking views across the Fylde Coast and the Lake District.

A highlight for families is the newly renovated Tropical Butterfly House, alongside mini-beasts, bird enclosures, and a small mammal section, adding a touch of the exotic to Lancaster’s leading visitor attraction. Visitors can relax at the Pavilion Café or browse the Gift Shop, stocked with a wide range of unique and exciting gift ideas.

At the heart of the park stands the iconic Ashton Memorial, a striking Edwardian folly that dominates Lancaster’s skyline. Recently restored, the Memorial was a gift to the city from Lord Ashton, built in memory of his second wife and set within parkland created by his father, James Williamson. The park itself was formed from former quarries that supplied stone for much of Lancaster’s historic architecture. Inside the Memorial, the Williamson Gallery offers exhibitions alongside spectacular panoramic views.

Williamson Park hosts numerous events and festivals throughout the year, including concerts, art exhibitions, guided walks, and the popular Dukes Theatre outdoor performances.

A classic car rally is scheduled to take place on this date, making it an especially lively time to visit.
