Day trip to scenic Northumberland and enjoy a visit to Holy Island & Bamburgh

Holy Island and Bamburgh

Take a journey through scenic Northumberland and enjoy a visit to Holy Island and Bamburgh.

Skim over the sands and causeway to Holy Island and prepare to enter another world. Lying just a few miles off the Northumberland coast, Holy Island is cut off twice-daily from the rest of the world by fast-moving tides. Both an island and a picturesque village, Holy Island carries a wealth of history within its tidal walls.

Visit Lindisfarne Priory, the Abbey ruins, Abbey Museum, not forgetting to buy your Lindisfarne Mead, made on the Island, from the Mead Shop. If you are feeling adventurous, take a stroll round to other end of the Island and visit the Sand Dunes, do a spot of seal watching or bird watching, there are many species to see.

Once we have exhausted the island, we will travel to the beautiful coastal village of Bamburgh, one of Northumberland’s most iconic and scenic destinations.

Overlooking miles of golden sand, Bamburgh Castle provides a striking backdrop to a relaxed and enjoyable day out. On arrival, guests will have free time to explore at their own pace, with the village, beach and attractions all conveniently within easy walking distance.

Enjoy browsing independent shops, relaxing in local cafés and tearooms, or taking a leisurely walk along Bamburgh Beach, located directly below the castle. A number of free attractions are available, including the RNLI Grace Darling Museum and St Aidan’s Church with its historic ossuary, offering insight into the area’s rich heritage.

For those wishing to enhance their visit, optional admission to Bamburgh Castle is available, allowing access to the castle’s impressive interiors, exhibitions and battlements.

Itinerary

Morning departure from the local area, we travel towards Northumberland’s scenic coastline with a comfort stop enroute. Visit to Holy Island and Bamburgh included. Itinerary subject to tide crossing times. Departing at 5.00PM for the journey home.

A TIDAL ISLAND: Holy Island is linked to the mainland by a long causeway. Twice each day the tide sweeps in from the North Sea and covers the road. Tide times and heights can be accurately predicted from the phases of the Moon. Severe weather can produce offsets, particularly with strong winds from the North and Northeast. The causeway crossing times are forecasted 'safe' crossing times. Nevertheless, travellers should remain vigilant if crossing near the extremities.

Please ensure you return at the time given by your driver, as failing to do so may result in you being unable to leave the island until the next low tide.

If you do not return on time, you may need to make your own way home.
